How to Compress a Passport Photo for Online Applications

Government online portals for passports, visas, and ID applications often impose very strict file size limits — sometimes as low as 20 KB or 50 KB. A photo taken with a modern smartphone is typically 3–8 MB, which is 60–400 times too large. This guide shows you how to compress your passport photo to meet any portal's requirements.

Typical Passport Photo Requirements by Country

Country / PortalFile Size LimitDimensions
India (Passport Seva)20–50 KB200 × 200 px (JPEG)
USA (DS-160 Visa)Under 240 KB600 × 600 px min
UK (GOV.UK)Under 10 MB (lenient)600 × 750 px min
Schengen Visa (typical)20–60 KB35 × 45 mm at 300 DPI
Australia (ImmiAccount)Under 500 KB35 × 45 mm
Canada (IRCC)Under 4 MB420 × 540 px min

Always check the specific portal you are using for the latest requirements, as they can change. The strictest portals (India Passport Seva, many Schengen applications) require 20–50 KB.

How to Compress Your Passport Photo

  1. 1

    Choose the right compression tool

Select the tool that matches your portal's requirement. Use "Compress to 20 KB" for Indian passport portals, "Compress to 50 KB" for most Schengen applications, or "Compress for Passport" for a general photo optimiser.

  2. 2

    Upload your photo

Upload your passport photo. The photo should already be properly cropped, centred on your face, and on a white or off-white background before compressing.

  3. 3

    Review the result

The compressed photo is shown with its new file size. Verify that your face is still clearly visible, sharp, and unaffected by compression artefacts.

  4. 4

Download and upload to the portal

Download the compressed file and upload it to the government portal. The file size will be within the required limit.

Will the Photo Still Look Acceptable?

Yes, for most portals. The compression algorithm used by FreeUtilityTools uses a binary search over JPEG quality settings to find the highest quality that fits within the target file size. At 50 KB, a 35×45 mm passport photo (414×531 px) will retain excellent clarity — faces are recognisable and the image is acceptably sharp for official verification.

At 20 KB, compression is more aggressive. The face will still be clearly identifiable, but fine details (hair, texture) will be noticeably smoothed. This is acceptable for automated portals that only verify the photo meets size limits, but a human reviewer examining a physical printout would notice the compression. Always check the portal's quality requirements in addition to the file size limit.
